Viva España

Viva España

It has been a while! I got back from my vacation in Spain not too long ago, and now I am preparing for another American adventure that´s coming up soon. But let me ask you this; do you like the heat? If so, Torrevieja is definitely the place to go. If not, do not go there in August like us because let me tell you, it was hot. I lived in Texas for six years, so you would think I am used to the heat, but the difference is that in Texas they actually have air conditioning everywhere. In Spain, not so much. The first few days it was around 40 degrees Celsius (104 F.) Needless to say, the first couple of days were spent by the pool trying to get used to the heat.

To get a little history in there, Torrevieja is a seaside city in the province of Alicante and was originally known as a salt-mining and fishing village. As a photographer I had heard that Torrevieja was probably not the most beautiful and scenic place to travel to if you wanted to capture some good landscape shots. I must say I was pleasantly surprised. I had just acquired a drone, so this was the perfect place to try it out.

I started out by learning all the different settings, what to do and what not to do, and shot some profile-pic-worthy (I hope haha) pictures by the pool. One of the first days the temperature dropped a little bit, we decided to visit the salt lakes. After a quick 10 minute cab ride, we were down by the salt lakes in Las Salinas. I was pretty excited to witness pink water for the first time. There were clear signs that you were not allowed to swim there, but still there was at least 10-12 people in the water, so I didn’t see the harm in flying my drone as well. The cool part was that the water looked a lot pinker from an aerial view than what it did from the ground. Although this was very cool to witness in real life, I think the cliffs located only a 15 minute walk from where we stayed was the most beautiful and most photogenic place in Torrevieja. We were also lucky to catch a very decent sunset.

The food!

You have probably heard of Spanish cuisine. Is it really as good as most people say? Well, I got to try both Spanish national dish paella which is a rice dish with saffron (that’s why the rice is yellow) and jumbo shrimp, mussels and chicken. Whilst my compatriots were applauding this, I can safely say that I have definitely tasted better. I also got to try some tapas, which is a combination of a lot of small dishes of various Spanish food. This was also just alright. I think the best good I ate was chicken at the local Swedish restaurant. I guess that says more about me though.

The conclusion..

If you with a group and you are looking for something fun to do, you should visit the fair in Torrevieja. I would be very surprised if you would not be able to find something to enjoy there no matter if you are 5 or 55. Here you could enjoy anything from different rides, Ferris wheel (don’t do it, it felt like it was going to fall apart,) bumper cars, and eat lots of unhealthy treats. My personal favorite was the one where you had to throw these small rubber rings on wine bottles, and if the ring stuck to the bottle, you got to take the bottle home with you. I actually won two bottles. Just too bad I don’t drink alcohol…….

All in all, is Torrevieja one of the most interesting places I have been to? No. Would I go there again? Yes. It’s a very happy-go-lucky place with a very warm climate (sometimes too warm,) nice sunsets, beautiful cliffs, and it’s also fairly cheap there. Now I am looking forward to my next adventure, which will be Miami, Florida.
